Effective CISSP Questions

A desktop computer sends an IP packet to the destination, 192.168.1.15/28. Which of the following devices most likely ignores or drops the packet?
A. Bridge
B. Switch hub
C. Router
D. Firewall

Kindly be reminded that the suggested answer is for your reference only. It doesn’t matter whether you have the right or wrong answer. What really matters is your reasoning process and justifications.

My suggested answer is C. Router.

A router will not route a packet with a destination of the broadcast.

  • A firewall may not serve as a gateway like a router, while a router is a gateway. It’s also uncommon to create policies to accept or reject broadcasts.
  • A bridge or switch hub will forward broadcasts.
  • Private IP addresses defined in RFC 1918 are routable.

192.168.1.15/28 is an IP address in CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) notation or 192.168.1.15 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.240 (dotted decimal). It is a broadcast address of the network 192.168.1.0/28. All the IP addresses are listed as follows:
